Rant #1

Let me start off Nato’s rants by letting you know in a word where I, Nato, am coming from. I am a conservative Republican who is sometimes proud to be a Republican and sometimes not so proud to be a Republican, but who is always proud to be a conservative. I am a retired physical chemist with a degree in Philosophy. This background will be applied to some of the current contraversal problems of our times.

I will start off with a copy of an email I recently sent to a relative in response to a an email which questioned some earlier Bush family financial dealings and which questioned Gov. Palin’s qualifications for VP.

The internet is both a blessing and a curse. You can sit in front of your computer and get information on any issue both pro and con. The tendency, therefore, is to pick the argument which is consistent with your agenda. We are all guilty of this to some extent, including you and me. Of course, you more than me. I recall when I put together that booklet on Global Warming, I announced right in the first page that I was presenting the con argument because the predominantly libel media was primarily presenting the pro argument.

I mention the above because I gave you two publications from the Wall Street Journal, which I regard as almost middle of the road, concerning the Obama/Ayers connection, and you give me the white wash from such liberal sources as the NY Times and Time magazine. And don’t tell me that I am being misled. I actually think you have been brainwashed.

The troublesome character of Obama is featured by his following associations:

  1. His association with the unrepentant terrorist Ayers is still coming to light and is even more recently even being featured by the main line media.
  2. His 20 year association with the Rev. Wright who is an extremely vocal racist who has said in context damn America, we deserve 9/11, and the US government developed the HIV virus in order to control the black population. Wright was finally thrown under the bus by Obama when it became politically expedient.
  3. His wife of 16 years who only very recently was proud to be an American and who thinks that Americans are, among other things, “mean”.
  4. His association with ACORN, as a lawyer and in their payroll, which organization is sponsored by the US government to promote voter non-partisan registration, among other things. ACORN is currently being investigated by the FBI in 13 contested states for voter fraud. And guess what? All the fraudulent registrations are for the Democratic party.
You subsequently cited in your email the financial dealings of the Bush family where you implied that they had shady dealings of a traitorous nature with the Bin Laden family, and I guess Bin Laden himself. This involvement of an illegal or traitorous nature was debunked several years ago. But consider your source the Fifth Estate. The Fifth Estate is a far left radical wing of the Liberal CBC, which is the former home of liberal Dan Rather, who didn’t even know he was liberal, and who is the guy who actually invented bias in the news. Consider also that the Fifth Estate has in their library the conspiracy theory where President Bush was behind 9/11 so that he would have an excuse for going around to start wars in the world. As a matter of fact, I do not know why we are even discussing Bush in the same context with Obama since Bush is not running for President. I guess the idea is that all Republicans are all evil.

Let us now discuss the Palin/Obama experience isssue. You have suggested that she is inexperienced, and does not know anything about international issues. I agree. The comparison of her background with Obama is that she has less political experience, but as a mayor and governor more executive experience. Neither one of them has international experience worth a damn. The fact is that neither one has the necessary experience to be president. But consider the following. If the Palin ticket wins, Palin has, according to life insurance estimates, a 1 in 10,000 probability of becoming president within the first year, and a 1 in 2,000 probability of becoming president within a 4 year period. If the Obama ticket wins, Obama has a 1 in 1 probability of becoming President. I would say that this thought is important.

Re: Palin political issues..

  • Palin is against abortion. The real issue is when is a fetus a human being with a soul. Unfortunately there is no litmus test. My religion tells me that we are dealing with a human being from time zero. I therefore agree with Palin based on faith. My philosophical instincts tell me that we are dealing with probabilities where the probability goes from zero at the instant of conception to 100% at the instant the chord is cut, and the probability curve is not in a straight line. I believe that a logical argument can be made that the probability curve rises rapidly during the first month and levels off at 100% at the 6th month. Evaluation of ethical actions in this case are controlled by probabilities. I therefore believe that any abortion, at least by the 6th month is the taking of the life of a human being and is, at least objectively, murder. The ONLY exception is when the mother’s life is in danger and we are dealing in terms of a life for a life. I also believe the probabilities are way too high in the earlier months without very serious reasons, which does not include an inconvenience. I applaud Palin for her views on abortion. Obama, on the other hand hand approves of late term abortions, and has even agreed in the conduct of a botched late term abortion where the fetus was delivered alive and allowed to die by neglect.
Note: A clear distinction must be made here concerning subjective and objective ethical responsibilities. A person is subjectively responsible for his ethical/moral action to the extent that that person evaluates the action to be ethically/morally right or wrong. For example, if a pro abortionist views a fetus as being a simple growth and not a human being, than there would be no subjective ethical/moral responsibility. In other words, the act would be considered ethically/morally neutral and would have the same ethical/moral impact as cutting your fingernails. On the other hand, if a person believes that there is a reasonably high probability that the fetus is a human being and subsequently participates in an abortion, than that person is committing murder and is subject to all the penalties, both in this world and next, associated with that act.

  • Palin is for guns including handguns, but with strict control. I have no problem with that as long as the laws are strictly enforced and sales are strongly supervised.
  • Palin is for drilling for oil in Anwar, and McCain is against drilling there and cited for example that he would not drill in the Grand Canyon. It is interesting to note that last year several million tourist visited the Grand Canyon while the number of tourist that visited Anwar during that same period was ZERO. I am strongly for drilling in Anwar for the following reasons: there is a large known field of oil there; the oil is readily accessible; there is an oil pipe line 47 miles away which is not operating at capacity; the oil can be brought on line in as little as 2 to 3 years. The negatives are that the landscape of about 1% of this isolated region will be irreversibly changed and a couple of polar bears might be upset.
  • I agree with Palin that we should DRILL DRILL DRILL in order to offset payments and dependency to countries, some of whom do not like us. I also agree that we should, with at least equal if not greater force, RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH to reduce our dependency on oil as our primary source of energy. The truth of the matter, which nobody can change, is that oil production can be increased in a matter of years, whereas the development of non-oil sources of energy, such as nuclear, wind, & solar, will require decades. I say, along with Palin, that we must do it all and start right now. It is interesting to note that Congress recently allowed offshore drilling beyond 50 mile when the accessible oil is actually located within 50 miles. What are they thinking?
